INTRODUCTION:
The word ‘orature’ or ‘oral literature’ is a term coined recently to mean traditions that are orally or verbally delivered or performed. It is basically, the study of customs, beliefs, values and opinions of humans in the societies which they are transferred from one generation to another verbally without any means of recording. Many attempts have been made to define this concept, and actually, so many definitions have been given by African scholars as to what this is meant. However, for want of space, I would quote the one coined by Pio Zirimu; he says “Oral literature is the use of utterance as an aesthetic form of expression”. He sees Oral literature as an autonomous entity, separate and apart from other forms of literature with its own traditions and norms.
